Cibo Matto Back Together Once Again! + Summer Tour
Posted on May 17, 2011 |
These two (Miho Hatori and Yuka Honda) Food lovin’, Brooklyn based, J-Girls
are back together after a 10-year break.
Their debut album, 1996’s “Viva! La Woman” was a delicious bland of trip-hop,
rap, electro, funky, samba-ish beats. The fact that they could barely speak
english at the time also added to their charm.
While both being from Japan, they never actually were a hit in their home country.
Their following was mostly here on college radios across the land.
They released one more album with 1999’s “Stereotype A” and disbanded in 2001.
I noticed them thanks to that eye catching, Michel Gondry directed video for “Sugar Water”, where a split screen was used, each side showing the same footage, one side going forward, and one backwards, meeting mid-song.
Pretty cool concept and the song is by far one of their best in their repertoire.
The reunion ball got rolling last March when they were part of benefit concert
to amass relief funds for Japan’s earthquake victims.
70 000$ was raised that night.
A few days later, Yoko Ono (her son Sean used to be in the band) had an event of
her own and got invited to play.
They gave a short interview to Time Out Tokyo explaining how all this all went
down.
What does the future holds for a reunited Cibo Matto?

They’re in the process of writing new songs for an upcoming album, which is
slated for an early 2012 release. Some of these new songs will be heard
at these upcoming shows and also right now, in this teaser video they shot
at Grand Central Station, you can hear a new piece of music in the background
with a nice, electro, tribal beat to it.
Here’s the 2 music videos they managed to crank out when they were active,
which got heavy rotation on “120 Minutes” back in the day.
