2011 Mercury Prize Nominations Announced

2 days ago in London, the shortlist for the 20th edition of the
Barclaycard Mercury Prize Album of the Year was announced.
The list:
Adele – 21
Anna Calvi – Anna Calvi
Elbow – Build A Rocket Boys!
Everything Everything – Man Alive
Ghostpoet – Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam
Gwilym Simcock – Good Days At Schloss Elmau
James Blake – James Blake
Katy B – On A Mission
King Creosote & Jon Hopkins – Diamond Mine
Metronomy – The English Riviera
PJ Harvey – Let England Shake
Tinie Tempah – Disc-Overy
Obviously, my choice would be for Elbow.
They’ve released one of the best album of the year so far in the whole wide world
but they won it 3 years ago with The Seldom Seen Kid so I don’t see that happening.
Again this year we have those “who the hell are these nominees?” in Ghostpoet
(electro hip hop) and Gwilym Simcock (Jazz) which actually makes me want to
check them out.
This will be a 3 way battle between Adele, James Blake and PJ Harvey and if I were a betting man, I would say PJ for the win. Although, she won for 2001‘s Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea, it wouldn’t surprise me if they went for her again as she is beloved by all of England.
September 6th is when we will find out the winner in the ceremony hosted by
Jools Holland.
The winner will get 20 000 pounds (30 000$ Canuck) in cold hard cash.
