Synopsis :

A tribute to Roger Corman, Hollywood’s most prolific writer-director producer, and seminal influencing force in modern moviemaking over the last 60 years.

This documentary chronicles how Corman created his cult film empire, one low-budget success at a time, capitalizing on undiscovered talent, and pushing
the boundaries
of independent filmmaking.

Jack Nicholson, William Shatner, Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, Robert De
Niro, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Joe Dante, Ron Howard,
Peter Bogdanovich, Jonathan Demme, James Cameron, Curtis Hanson,
John Sayles
.

What do all these Hollywood icons have in common?

Roger Corman gave them their first shot in the pictures.

A living legend at 85, he’s produced nearly 400 films and directed more
than 50.

In this documentary, you will get many testimonials from people like Paul W.S. Anderson, Peter Bogdanovich, Robert De Niro, Peter Fonda, Pam Grier, Ron Howard, Eli Roth, Martin Scorsese, William Shatner and Jack Nicholson. Talking up the greatness of this man and what he means to each and everyone one of them.

Being a fan of the Grindhouse genre, I always wanted to know how he could
manage to churn out so many movies in such a short period of time or how
he had this uncanny ability to find great talents and nurture said talents
and gave them the knowledge and tools to be who they became.

All will be revealed in this long overdue tribute to the man and his legacy.

Listen: AGDFA / HOS / DW 90s Classique Special Extravaganza!

Posted on | November 22, 2011 | No Comments

Ahhhhhhhhhhh the 90’s.

A time when the Information Age blossomed to what it is today and where flannel
was a valid fashion choice.

It’s also the decade in which my music taste was formed.

Back in September, my bros (Omar from CJLO‘s Hooked On Sonics and Denis from Dirty Work) and I did this 4 hour radio session of strictly 90’s alternative
music
, coming from an idea yours truly had of expanding on Omar’s 90’s Classique segment on his show.

Pretty much all of our favorites made the cut. From seminal Grunge bands like
Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden, Canadian bands near and dear to our hearts or one hit wonders like Star 69.

This is a good primer for the youngins outthere who barely came to be around that time or for old foggies like us, who want to reminisce about the good old days.

As I said jokingly on the air that night, we do have exceptional taste in music so
clearly you’ll get something out of it.

I’ve split the show in two mp3 files with a setlist for each.

The fun shall prevail, as we are planning a part deux for this whole insanity to
continue early next year.

This is a bit last minute but a new local band by the name of Young Lungs are
making their live debut tomorrow night @ Cagibi.

Thursday, November 17
Le Cagibi ( 5490 St Laurent / corner St. Viateur )
https://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=260421980670139

I give you the bio:

After years of kicking around basements and garages, honing their chops in other
local garage punk bands, this trio of dapper young gents from Montreal have cooked
up a collection of garage-y pop tunes cut into delectable pieces with a post-punk
buzzsaw.

Their forthcoming 7″ (Blood On The Streets) and LP has been produced locally by
CJLO’s Omar Husain and mastered by Jon Drew (Fucked Up / Austra / Tokyo Police Club).

First impression I got listening to these 2 songs … Ted Leo & The Pharmacists.

Give it a listen see if you hear it too:

1. “Blood On The Street”
2. “Attack Of The Montana Red”

Early January for official 7″ release and the LP later on in the year.

What’s M For Montreal all about?

Back in 2006, local music promoter Sebastian Nasra and U.K concert programmer
Martin Elbourne (Glastonbury) created M For Montreal as a showcase for
up-and-coming Montreal bands to basically pimp them out to music festivals
around the world.

It’s now become a showcase for Canadian music as a whole. What they do is to
cater to international music buyers, journalists, taste makers to experience
Montreal’s music, arts, nightlife and culture. M for Montreal also produce
events at SXSW, The Great Escape, CMJ, Canadian Music Week and
throughout the year in Montreal.

For it’s 6th edition, 60+ bands will be featured starting tonight through
Saturday.

For my first M4M experience, these picks are on top of my list:

Young Empires

La Sala Rossa / 8:30pm ( Thursday )

Half Moon Run

Café Campus / 1pm ( Friday )

Alaclair Ensemble

Café Campus / 2pm ( Saturday )
