Posted on | May 19, 2011 | No Comments

First up, here be new additions to the lineup:

Friday

Timber Timbre Glass Candy The Barr Brothers Comic Strip El Ten Eleven Sweet Thing Anita Tijoux MC2

Saturday

Especially happy to see Timber Timbre on there though it will be quite a change to see them outside, in broad daylight, on one assumes a hot, sunny afternoon where a sunbrella umbrella rather than a dark and dank venue.

That Scottish five-some known as Frightened Rabbit is a mighty nice surprise aswell. Last year’s album “The Winter Of Mixed Drinks” is still in heavy rotation in me iPod. Now, for the “In The City” lineup which is like a tease if you will to the main event, getting our beaks wet with tasty musical treats in those dark and dank venues I spoke of earlier. The BIG name here being James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem, who since shutting down his beloved group last month, going at it solo with his LCD drummer Pat Mahoney to DJ a party @ Olympia Theatre, July 30th.

Cibo Matto Back Together Once Again! + Summer Tour

Posted on | May 17, 2011 | No Comments

These two (Miho Hatori and Yuka Honda) Food lovin’, Brooklyn based, J-Girls
are back together after a 10-year break.

Their debut album, 1996’s “Viva! La Woman” was a delicious bland of trip-hop,
rap, electro, funky, samba-ish beats. The fact that they could barely speak
english at the time also added to their charm.

While both being from Japan, they never actually were a hit in their home country.
Their following was mostly here on college radios across the land.

They released one more album with 1999’s “Stereotype A” and disbanded in 2001.

I noticed them thanks to that eye catching, Michel Gondry directed video for “Sugar Water”, where a split screen was used, each side showing the same footage, one side going forward, and one backwards, meeting mid-song.

Pretty cool concept and the song is by far one of their best in their repertoire.

The reunion ball got rolling last March when they were part of benefit concert
to amass relief funds for Japan’s earthquake victims.

70 000$ was raised that night.

A few days later, Yoko Ono (her son Sean used to be in the band) had an event of
her own and got invited to play.

They gave a short interview to Time Out Tokyo explaining how all this all went
down.

What does the future holds for a reunited Cibo Matto?

Why a tour of course.

From June 21st to 26th, they’ll hit the West Coast and from July 11th to 20th,
the Midwest and East Coast with one stop here in Canuckland, July 16th @
The Mod Club.

6/21 – Seattle, WA – Neumo’s
6/22 – Vancouver, BC – Fortune
6/23 – Portland, OR – Doug Fir
6/25 – San Francisco, CA – Bimbo’s
6/26 – Los Angeles, CA – Hollywood Bowl
7/12 – Brooklyn, NY – Brooklyn Bowl
7/14 – Chicago, IL – Lincoln Hall
7/16 – Toronto, ON – Mod Club
7/18 – New York, NY – Bowery Ballroom
7/19 – Washington, DC – Rock N Roll Hotel
7/20 – Boston, MA – Brighton Music Hall

They have a brand new blog up and running @ yeahbasicallycibomatto.com and you can follow them on Twitter (@YukaCHonda / @mihohatori) to get updated on their going ons.

They’re in the process of writing new songs for an upcoming album, which is
slated for an early 2012 release. Some of these new songs will be heard
at these upcoming shows and also right now, in this teaser video they shot
at Grand Central Station, you can hear a new piece of music in the background
with a nice, electro, tribal beat to it.

Here’s the 2 music videos they managed to crank out when they were active,
which got heavy rotation on “120 Minutes” back in the day.

2011 Summer Movie Guide ( May Edition )

Posted on | May 9, 2011 | No Comments

What this crude, hastily put together graphic does indeed suggests,
I’ve decided to make my own Summer movie preview.

My love of cinema equals only my irrational love of all things music.

I can remember days in my misbegotten youth where school would be skipped
to go downtown and catch 3 movies in one day at the old Palace theater (RIP).

Those were the days.

Anyhoo …

I’ll break this into 4 parts. Show you what trailers have tickled my
fancy.

Out Now

Directed by Jason Eisener
Starring:
Rutger Hauer, Gregory Smith ( IMDB )

About a year ago, I discovered the joy of Grindhouse movies. I’ve been
on a steady diet of trailers from that era (1950s to mid 80s) ever since.

Hobo is an homage to the 70s revenge movie a la Death Wish, basically
Rutger Hauger getting his Bronson on, mowing down the bad element.

This is definitely not for the faint of hearts. Beheadings are a recurring
theme here. This is my fav film of the year so far and it’s also Canuck
made which fills me with pride.

Directed by Michael Goldbach
Starring: Kat Dennings, Reece Thompson, Josh Lucas ( IMDB )

Kat Dennings playing a mopey high school teen who ain’t happy she just
moved in a small town.

She’s caught in a love triangle between her teacher and a stoner kid.

Kat Dennings is hella sexy. I’d watch her in anything. Even in an
angsty teen drama. Which I did and she made it worth the hassle.

Directed by Jim Mickle
Starring: Connor Paolo, Nick Damici, Kelly McGillis, Danielle Harris ( IMDB )

A Vampire epidemic strikes. People turn into tasty treats on legs. They hide.
Hunters and slayers rises to the occasion. They fight back.

Wackiness ensues.

Directed by Takashi Miike
Starring: Kôji Yakusho, Takayuki Yamada, Yûsuke Iseya ( IMDB )

Samurai killing the shit out of each other to get to the evil warlord who they
want to slice and dice most of all.

Fun for the whole family.

Directed by Mitch Glazer
Starring: Mickey Rourke, Megan Fox, Bill Murray, Kelly Lynch ( IMDB )

I’ll watch Bill Murray in anything.

ANYTHING.

The man rules all.

I just wish he would star in a straight up comedy again.

Ya know, something like a “What About Bob?” or “Groundhog Day” or the very
underrated
1990 bank heist comedy “Quick Change” which he co-directed.

This new film noir reunites him with Mitch Glazer who wrote “Scrooged”,
my favorite Christmas movie of all time.

This new role is reminiscent of his 1993 turn as a gangster in
“Mad Dog And Glory”.

The only difference here is this movie’s been getting some really
god awful reviews.

In fact, this was set to be released straight to DVD but for some reason
the powers that be wants this in a few theaters across the land.

I’ll watch it. Even if I have to sit through Megan Fox‘s “acting”.

May 13th

Directed by Dan Rush
Starring: Will Ferrell, Rebecca Hall, Laura Dern, Michael Peña ( IMDB )

Ferrell plays an alchi who because of this predicament, loses his job and his wife
who throws him out of the house with all his possessions with him on their front lawn.

He decides to live on said front lawn and have a yard sale in an attempt to
start over. A new neighbor and kid sidekick enters the picture.

Ferrell’s last stab at indie movie cred was 2006’s “Stranger Than Fiction”.

I may be alone in this but Farrell doesn’t do it much for me. Only on rare occasions
like say “Anchorman” that he got a few chuckles out of me but “Stranger Than Fiction” I liked so looking forward to this.

FYI: the kid sidekick is played by Christopher Jordan Wallace, the spawn of Notorious B.I.G. and Faith Evans.
